Laziness Does Not Exist

Dr. Devon Price is a social psychologist, writer, activist, and professor at Loyola University. Fun fact: my husband works there as well!

In their new book titled, Laziness Does Not Exist, Devon talks about the distorted view and limitations that come with our relationship to work. This is broken down into three major principles.

The Laziness Lie

  1. Your worth is defined by your productivity.
  2. You can’t trust any feelings of need or limitations that you have.
  3. There’s always more that you could be doing.

Dr. Price believes these three statements are rooted in capitalism, enslavement, and American ideologies that we have used against ourselves for far too long. In turn, society tells us our “laziness” is something that needs to be fixed. Newsflash: it’s not!

Listen to Your Body

It’s important to listen to the wants and needs of your body, especially with all that’s currently happening in the world. And although the workforce says to push and power through, there’s no need. When your body says it’s time for a break, trust that you know what’s best for you.

Set New Rules

Establishing a new “normal” is key. As we do the work to understand ourselves and our needs when it comes to work, here are a few questions to ask:

  1. Why don't I have the freedom to look after my needs?
  2. Is there anything that I can do to change this?
  3. How can I give myself grace as I go through the process of acknowledging and responding to my needs?
